Beastly

  1. The setting for the novel Beastly is New York City, New York. Most of the story takes place in the main character's home, a five story brick building. The setting is important to the novel because since the main character is a beast, it is a challenge hiding himself from the many people of New York. His secluded home, however, helps him hide from the rest of mankind. The main character's name is Kyle. He is described as being "beastly". A girl he humilates, Kendra, tells Kyle at the school dance outright that he is "beastly". We also see that Kyle is not a nice person by the way he talks about other people being ugly and how ugly people should not have the same privleges as the "beautiful people"

  2. The setting in the novel Beastly is in Manhattan, New York City sometime in the 2000s because of all the technology mentioned. The setting is very important because as you may know, a place in New York City like Manhattan is very crowed with a large population and this is exactly where Kyle, the protagonist, runs into trouble when he is turned into a beast. He’s always trying to hide and to avoid being seen by people because of his looks. As I mentioned earlier, Kyle is one of the main characters and Lindy who is later mentioned in the book is also one of the main characters. She is the one who is suppose to free Kyle from the spell he’s under. Lindy seems to be the kind of girl who is lonely and is looking for a better life away from her father. Kyle, on the other hand is the your regular type of guy who only cares about himself.

  3. The setting of the novel is New York in the early 2000s. I think the setting is important because the story is supposed to be what happened to the beast before Beauty and the Beast, but it is told in a later time. I think the time and place are more relatable to teens today than it would be if the story were told in the same time as the original Beauty and the Beast. The main character is Kyle Kingsbury. He is described as arrogant and selfish. He thinks he can get away with anything because he is rich and good looking. And he actually does do whatever he wants until he picks on a witch and gets himself turned into a hairy, ugly beast.

  4. The novel, Beastly, takes place in a highschool named Tuttle in the state of New York. Tuttle Highschool is known for the kids taht attemd because of the background they come from. The wealthier people of New York are the ones that send their kids to Tuttle. Basically the enviroment would all be sumed up into one stuck up. The main characters so far are Kyle Kingsbury and Kendra Hilferty. Kyle Kingsbury is the son of Rob Kingsbury and Kyle feels as if the world revolves around him since he is so self centered. In the book Kyle says,"And that's wrong?" I grinned wider, to bug him, and gave a little wave like people do in parades," this occured when Kyle was talking to his friend Trey. It isn't stated directly that Kyle is self centered, but is implied. Kendra on the other hand was directly said that she is a goth girl. As said by Kyle to his friend Trey,"That goth chick in English was weird." As you can see the setting to the story helps develop the way the characters and how come they act the way they do.

  5. This is a comment/reaction to what Anonymous and Kiran S. said.

Annonymous: You mentioned Lindy as being lonely and wanting a life away from her father. However, I tend to disagree. I feel like Lindy wants her father to change and be better for her, not to be away from him. Lindy loves her father for the man she wants and hopes him to be, and I think she feels like he will never be that man if she leaves him on his own.

Kiran S.: You said the setting was Tuttle HS. I find your opinion interesting. While in my opinion the setting is New York and Kyle's apartment, I can see where you're coming from. The story is set up in Tuttle HS, because that is where Kyle angers Kendra. Tuttle may not be a major setting, but it is certainly an important one.

  6. I like how two of the other comments touch on the fact that Kyle cuts himself off from the rest of the world even though he does live in New York, which is an extremely busy city. His dad abandons him in that huge house and he is almost alone.
All of us talked about Kyle, but only one of the other blogs even mentioned Lindy even though she was a very key part of the story. She is Kyle’s last chance at breaking the curse. So she really is a main character too.

  7. I do like how it's mentioned that the story takes place it seems as in the 2000s. That fact is supported by the idea of all the technology that is mentioned that is being used was all part of the 2000s. Also that its been stated that the story takes place in New York and that its crowded there causes the main character Kyle to have to hide when he is turned into a beast. It just shows exactly who can be accepted into society and who can't.

  8. I like how there is a comparison between the traditional Beauty and the Beast comparing it to Beastly. Its been said that Beastly is like the modern way of saying what happened to the Beast in Beauty and the Beast just that in Beastly the Beast is more relatable to teens today. Basically I like how its been stated that the setting of the novel is easier for todays teens to relate to compared to the tradional Beauty and the Beast.

  9. An internal conflict that Kyle faces midway through the book is that he has to find true love and he can't base that off of looks it has to be true love. So with him being a beast now he feels like he can't impress any girl and that he won't be able to break the curse. I had predicted that his internal conflict would be resolved when he would find that girl that will love him for who he is on the inside and that he needs to first be able to figure it out for himself. A mood that the author created was the sense of pity because when Kyle sits there desperate trying to find that perfect girl taht will love him you actually start to feel pitty for him. Since for the first time he can't just use his looks to impress a girl he has to impress her with who he is.

  10. Jocelyn W. has a point when she talks about how we as teens can relate to the novel because of the time period in which the story is told. The setting of the novel makes it very easy to follow at all times without ever getting lost. Kiran S. also pointed out how even though they never directly said Kyle was very narrow-minded, you could perceive it from when you first start reading the novel. For example, he said, “I could feel people looking at me, but I was used to it.” “When you’re special, like we were (By we he meant his father and him), people were bound to notice.”

  11. An external conflict Kyle faces in the novel is Lindy’s initial animosity towards him. Kyle is at first struggling to gain Lindy’s acceptance, let alone her affection. He is battling Lindy’s outward hatred with patience and understanding. I believe that, eventually, this conflict will be resolved when Lindy has spent enough time living with Kyle to realize he means well, and that no harm will come to her under his care.
The tone of the novel thus far is one of hopefulness. Where on an outer level Kyle tells himself and others there is no love strong enough to overcome the curse he is under, deeper down Kyle has the hope and the faith that he will find a woman to love him for the person he is, despite his outer appearance, which is why he continues to try to find that love with Lindy.

  12. The big internal conflict in the novel is that after Kyle is turned into the beast he feels like no one can love him because he is so ugly and scary. He has never looked past anyone’s looks so he doesn’t think others will either. If no one can fall in love with him then he can’t break the spell and turn back into himself. He thinks he will be stuck as a beast for the rest of his life and he gets very depressed. I think this conflict will be resolved by Lindy falling in love with Kyle and breaking the spell. By doing that, she will show him that it is possible for someone to look past his beastly appearance.
The mood that the author evoked was sympathy. At first it seems like Kyle got what he deserved when he was turned into a beast, but then you see how depressed he is and how much he changes. He realizes that you can’t coast through life on just good looks and “Daddy’s money” and you start to feel sorry for him.

The setting of the novel Beastly is New York City, and the main location where it takes place is in the main characters house. The setting is important to the novel because the main character is a beast and he hides out in his house, instead of coming out and facing the rest of the world. The main characters are Kyle Kingsbury and Kendra. Kyle is described as beastly by Kendrra. Kyle goes to school where everything is about money and looks. And Kyle has been raised to judge people on their class instead of the actual perosn they are. He is mean towards others who dont fit in. Kendra is described as a witch, and Kendra told Kyle off in front of the class and told him he was "beastly" and he felt he should get back at her and he did. This made Kendra turn him into a beast to teach him a lesson.

The external conflict in the novel "Beastly" is that Kyle the main character faces is he is a beast and can not go outside or have a life. The internal conflict is that Kyle was turned into a beast because he was mean towards others.Kyle thought that eveything was about looks and money. Kyles dad was never around he was always working so he gave Kyle everything. When was turned into a beast he was told that you should not judge people on looks, its about the person they are. He has two years to find true love in order to become a human again

  15. The external conflict between Kyle and Lindy that Katelyn S. mentions kind of goes along with the internal conflict I mentioned. In both cases Lindy is the key to fixing the problem. She has to understand Kyle and fall in love with him for the curse to be broken and the conflicts to be resolved.

I agree with K. Singh when she says that the mood is sense of pity because Kyle learns his lesson way before he even has a chance at breaking the spell. For a large portion of the book he feels like breaking the curse is impossible and he won’t ever get his old life back. So you start to pity him.

  16. This is a comment/reaction to Jocelyn W and A Kajtezovic :

    Jocelyn W:
I have to disagree with you that the mood is sympathetic. Yes, Kyle aka Adrian becomes depressed over is curse, but as you mentioned, he DID deserve it. And the personality changes that accompanied the following depression were for the better, and I felt happy for Kyle that he was changing into a better being.

    A Kajtezovic:
You said that "Kyles dad was never around he was always working..." I was curious, do you think the absence of a father figure in Kyle's life contributed to his "beastly" behavior? I know you said that Kyle's dad gave him everything because he wasn't around very often, but do you think that if Kyle's dad gave him everything but was a bigger part of Kyle's life that Kyle would still be such a jerk? I tend to think that Kyle's inner emotional frustrations at his father caused him to take his anger out on the people around him, not the fact that he was spoiled.

  17. Comment/reaction:
According to A Kajtezovic the internal conflict is that Kyle is turned into a beast due to the fact that he was mean towards others. I don't see how would that have to do with anything internally that is more along the lines of being and external conflict since it's something that everyone sees. Also, I would say that the internal conflict would be the fact that Kyle can not go outside or have a life because he has to deal with the what he has and that is more along the lines of suffering on the inside.

Jocelyn W points out that Kyle feels like no one can ever look past the way he looks and they will judge him according to that. I say that Kyle thinks this way due to the fact that he himself was raised that and so his thinking is transformed the same way. The mood that was evoked for me was that of pity because you feel bad that this teenage boy has to deal with all this and has to fall in love in order to break a curse. I mean I do say he did learn a lesson out of it but still there is that sympathy as said by Jocelyn that you feel.

  18. I agree with Katelyn S. that Lindy wants her father to change and would rather be home with him. I feel that Lindy just wants her dad to love her, she feels rejected and of course no one likes that and she hopes that he will realize what he is doing.

This comment is for Karen, I dont think the main setting is the school, only couple of events take place there, the main setting would be his apartment, because thats where he spends all his time when he was turned into a beast and then of course the setting changes with his dad sends him away to a new house.

  19. Like Katelyn, I agree on what she said about how Kyle was struggling trying to win Lindy’s love. So far he’s been showing a lot of patience and care to show her he’s really not as bad as she thinks he is. For example, he doesn’t pressure her to do anything she doesn’t want to do like have dinner with him or make her come out of her room if she doesn’t want to. Also, like Jocelyn, when Kyle is first turned into a beast you think he deserves everything that he’s going through. All the pain, feeling forsaken and even losing all his “friends.” However, on the other hand, you begin to feel sorry for him and start wishing he finds his one true love to break the spell and set him free once and for all.

  20. I was satisfyed with the ending because eventhough it was a typical fairy tale ending it still had that touch of being unique. Without giving away the ending I must say that I was pleased with the fact that at the end of the book everyone goes their way that was destined to them. Beastly was a recipient for the Gateway Award I would say due to the wide range of audience it attracts. Also, with the idea that it is the all time favorite Beauty and the Beast just set in modern and more relateable times. Just the novel overall keeps you wanting to read more in order to find out what really does happen to Kyle and Lindy in the end. Basically, the book was a recipient due to the writing technique the author used.

  21. I have to say I was very satisfied with then ending. It was different from what we are used to. Everybody get’s what they want and they just move on with their new life, as a better person of course. I thought it was chosen as a recipient of the Gateway Book Award because of how realistic and up-to-date the author made it sound. It didn’t sound to much like a fairy tale, it just sounded like a novel that covered common problems we see everyday which made it stand out from all other novels.

  22. I was satisfied with the end of the novel. All of the conflicts were resolved before the end and I think Kyle became a new, better person. I was worried at first that it wouldn’t end the way I thought it would but I ended up being right and getting the happily ever after that I wanted.
I think Beastly was chosen for a Gateway because it’s a really good modern spin on beauty and the beast that is very relatable to teens.

I was satisfyed with the ending because it was a fairy tail ending. The ending was well put together, it made you happy and also had a lesson within the novel. I think this book was chosen as a rescipent of the gateway book award because this book had a very good lesson that every person can relate too. We live our lives thinking everything is based on looks and money and this book helps you see that its about the beauty inside you. The moment you start reading this book you cant put it down because you want to find out what happens with Kyle and Lindy. The author did a great job with the writing of the book and also the great lesson that you get out of the book.

  24. I'm sorry, but I must disagree with Diana S. I think it very much seemed like a fairy tale, with a realistic twist. But for the author to write about witches, beasts, and spells but make it real enough for a reader to not veiw it as an fairy tale speaks volumes of the author's talent to make the reader believe.

As for what Jocelyn said, I agree that the book tied up all the loose ends well, and wrapped everything up. Except for one thing: Lindy's father. I don't remember ever reading anything about what happend to the realtionship between Lindy and her father. Other than that, the book ended nice and neat.

Beastly is a modern day retelling of the Beauty and the Beast. Kyle is a sixteen year old boy at a private high school in New York. He has everything, money, the looks and the friends. Kyle told an ugly girl he would take her to a school dance and it ended up being a prank. When Kyle got home that night that ugly girl happened to be a witch. Her name was Kendra and she turned him into a beast to teach him a lesson. The lesson was to learn that not everything is based on looks and money. Kyle has two years to find love based on actual love. This is a conflict because Kyle is a beast and doesn’t think anyone can look past him being a beast. The author Alex Flinn did a great job retelling modern day version of the “Beauty and the Beast.” He showed and taught people that not everything is based on looks and money. He showed a boy that was shallow turn into a great person. Of course this book was predictable; it was hard to stop reading. The author did a great job with the characters and teaching a valuable lesson.

  26. Beastly by Alex Flinn is a fantasy novel about a teenage boy in New York, named Kyle Kingsbury who learns that he can’t rely on his looks to get him through life, especially when they are taken away. Kyle picks on anyone that looks less than perfect, but when he angers a witch, she turns him into a beast. She tells him that he has two years to get someone to fall in love with him and if he doesn’t he will stay a beast forever. At first it seems hopeless that Kyle will find love even though he learns not to judge others by their looks. His father abandons him and the only people he has to talk to are his maid and his blind tutor. Then Lindy moves in and Kyle does everything he can to make her happy even though she is being held there against her will because her father broke into Kyle’s house and gives up his Lindy for his own freedom. Kyle gets her to see past his appearance and fall in love with him. When he lets her leave to help her father it seems impossible that Kyle will ever see Lindy again, but he finds her and she kisses him, breaking the curse and turning him back to normal.
I liked the book a lot. It was quick read and I liked the lesson that Kyle learned about inner beauty. I enjoyed watching his personality change throughout the book from the snobby, good looking, rich boy who didn’t really care about others to a humble person who just wanted to find love.
